If You Want The Home Buying or Selling Process To Run Smoothly, You’ve Got to Learn To Work Well With Your Realtor

Real estate agents are a wonderful asset. They are very helpful, and have lots of knowledge that can help you buy the best home for your needs, or get your home sold; whichever is the case. However, you should realize that they can get frustrated at times, as many real estate agents are mistreated by their clients.

Understand that when they tell you something, they know what they are talking about. They’re not telling it to you to upset your feelings, or irritate you. Here are some things that you should be aware of when you are in the process of working with your realtor.

First things first, they are paid on commission. This means that if you don’t buy or sell a house, they don’t get paid…at all. So all of those houses that you want to run around and see, they’re spending their own gas, money, and time.

Don’t ask them to go see homes that you know you either can’t afford, or that you don’t have much interest in. It’s a complete waste of their time, and they could be helping another client who actually is serious about the home buying or selling process. Next, always be reliable. You aren’t the only person they’re working for. Realtors need a number of clients at any given time in order to be successful. That’s not to say you aren’t a priority, it’s just that every one of their clients has to be a priority. If you say you’re going to be at a house at a particular time, you need to be there. It’s going to seriously irritate them if you waste their time. You can’t expect them to respect you, if you don’t respect them.

If you feel that you can’t work with listing agents, hire your own real estate agent. If you are in the process of interviewing multiple ones, let them know that. The real estate community is very small. Just about all of them know each other. It will eventually get back to them, and it won’t be a good look for you. It can also be embarrassing for them. They could be telling people that you’re their new client, when really, you’ve been cheating with other agents that they know behind their back.

You can resolve a lot of issues from the beginning if you make your expectations clear at the get-go. Find out where they prefer to meet. Do they prefer phone calls, or in-person visits? Would they rather e-mail, or text message? You should both discuss this; it will save a lot of confusion in the long-run. Read: Why You Still Need a Real Estate Agent – FORBES.

Before you sign anything, always ask your realtor to explain it to you if you are confused. Even agents sometimes need to consult with lawyers when they have a question regarding a document. Don’t frown on your realtor if they don’t know an answer to a question. They didn’t pass the bar.

Lastly, don’t hire a real estate agent unless you’re ready to buy a house. If you know that you’re just considering buying a house, and want to shop to see what’s out there, let them know that. Then they can be honest with you about how much time they have to devote to you.  For further reading, see: Why Use a Realtor? Realtor.com
